To develop a touch screen graphical user interface (GUI) for a new electric vehicle to both showcase the technology but also serve as a usable solution to test the vehicles and gather data. The drive technology involves a unique, in-wheel electric drive system that allows OEMs to create hybrid vehicles in substantially reduced timescales. This technology had to be clearly evident on the GUI.
After understanding the various requirements, we created a wire-frame design which clearly indicated the most important display aspect, that of the range on the current charge based on the current driving style. Our solution also indicated the potential maximum and minimum estimated range based on algorithms around the drivers potential driving styles. Other display aspects indicated which drive wheels were active or had develop faults and clear control of optional driving modes. We then created three alternative styles and worked with the customer to select the preferred style and then implemented the full touch screen user interface. For gathering data to analyse, we had separate data and histogram screens that could be easily accessed from the main screen with a single touch.
